I’m in love with simple dinners, and this one left stars in my eyes. It couldn’t be any easier to make, since even the pasta gets cooked right in the pot. I paired the Baked Ziti with a caesar salad and some garlic bread, and wow – it was a winner!

The star of the dish is the Progresso’s Fire Roasted Tomato Recipe Starter sauce. It’s packed with roasted tomato and red bell pepper flavor, with basil and a touch of cream, which makes this easy skillet dish come together perfectly. Let me show you how simple this really is.

Start by browning up some italian sausage in your skillet, drain if necessary. I used a mild sausage, but a hot italian sausage would be fabulous in here too!

Pour in the Fire Roasted Tomato sauce.

Followed by the pasta and some water.

Give it a good stir to combine, then bring the mixture to a boil, reduce heat and cook until the pasta is tender.

Top with some mozzarella cheese.

Throw in a little fresh basil, cover it up for a couple minutes until the cheese gets melted and you’re ready to serve!

I know it’s not technically “baked” so if you really want to, you can put your oven-safe skillet under the broiler for a few minutes to quickly get a baked top. It’s not necessary though, because the cheese gets super melty all on it’s own from the hot pasta.

One Skillet Baked Ziti
Serves: serves 6
  • 1 lb. ground Italian sausage (mild or hot)
  • 9oz Progresso Fire Roasted Tomato Sauce Recipe Starter pouch
  • 2 cups uncooked penne pasta
  • 1½ cups water
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 to 2 tbsp fresh basil, cut into thin strips
  1. Cook sausage in a 10 inch skillet over medium-high heat 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until no longer pink; drain.
  2. Stir in Fire Roasted Tomato Sauce, pasta, and water. Heat to boiling, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat to medium.
  3. Simmer uncovered about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender. Remove from heat; sprinkle with cheese and fresh basil. Cover and let stand 2 to 3 minutes or until cheese is melted. Serve immediately. Enjoy!

  3. At our house I call this Emergency Ziti (because it is served it without baking). I make large pots of sauce and freeze so I never even knew this Progresso stuff existed. Add a few spoons of ricotta cheese and it will be uber creamy.

  5. What a very tasty & EZ recipe (especially for busy new moms – and for the ladies who have jobs outside of their homes). I prepared this dish just as it was written, and it was supurb! The next time I make it (and I definately will) I’ll ‘lighten it up’ a bit by using either ‘lite’ sausage meat, or 96/4% Ground Sirloin. Also, I cooked the pasta before adding it, because I didn’t want the starch from the pasta in the final product(yup…yet more calories, and who needs ’em?). Serfiously, this is a very E-Z dish to prepare, and awsomemly tasty!

    • Yes, traditionally a “Baked Ziti” is baked, but since this has all the components of a baked ziti without being baked, I still labeled it that way so anyone searching for a “baked ziti” can find this simpler and quicker recipe. Also, if you’re using an oven safe skillet, you can definitely toss it in the oven for the last few minutes to bake the cheese, but it’s not necessary.

    I have to say this recipe turned out awesome! I was a little worried at first because we got to the store and couldn’t find the Progresso sauce anywhere. From a quick search on the internet, it actually looks like the product is discontinued now. Instead of completely panicking, we looked for a close substitute and ended up getting a can of Progresso Vegetable Classics Hearty Tomato Soup, because that’s basically pasta sauce and water, right? Nothing like improvising an hour before dinner! We still had to add a bit of water to make sure the pasta cooked, but the result was excellent and I plan on making it again. Also, we used sweet Italian sausage from the deli at Sprouts and it turned out great. Thanks for the recipe :)
