2 Ingredient Magic Shell

Last week my family and I went on a long vacation with many stops.

Our first stop was an impromptu camping trip in Northern Arizona with some old friends that we hadn’t seen in years. While sitting in my camp chair I listened to a dear friend tell me all about the benefits of Coconut Oil. She was using it for skin care, deodorant, and frying chicken.

Yeah… I was a little skeptical.

But at the same time, intrigued.

Flash forward a few days and we are at my In-Law’s in Southern Utah. The whole family is over and after a fun filled dinner we move on to dessert. The enormous variety of ice cream that is kept  in my Father-in-law’s freezer is pulled out for everyone to enjoy. Then I spy a bowl of liquid gold {ok, it’s just liquid chocolate} sitting next to all the ice cream. Not asking any questions I pick up the spoon and drizzle the chocolate on top of the ice cream.

To my surprise it is Magic Shell ice cream topper. You know, the kind of chocolate that stays liquid at room temp and hardens to sweet magical chocolaty goodness when applied to frozen treats? I asked my lovely Mother-in-law how she made such concoction, surely it’s some secret magical potion…

Coconut Oil.

Now I am really loving this Coconut Oil idea!

I did a little research {emphasis on little} and apparently (according to Dr. Oz) there are several health benefits to Coconut Oil! A few being : helps regulate blood sugar, improves bone and dental health, helps make skin youthful and healthy looking.

But what’s most important to me is the taste.

{and chocolate}

There is no over powering coconut taste. None actually. It’s very pure and clean tasting.

When combined with the chocolate that is all you taste. Just chocolate!

In a large, {microwavable} bowl or measuring cup, combine Coconut Oil with semi-sweet chocolate chips. Microwave in short intervals of 30 seconds and 50% power, stirring in between, until smooth.

I poured the Magic Shell into a squeeze bottle with a lid for ease of use. But you can keep it in any air tight container.

Scoop some ice cream and simply drizzle or pour on the Magic Chocolate Goodness…

-Which, can we say… is healthy??? …{my sister-in-law would probably slap me right now}-

Give it just a few seconds to harden before taking your spoon and whacking it.

Is it just me or is that not the funnest part?

What is even better- is that now you have a giant bottle of Magic Shell for much less than what you would pay for a tiny bottle of it at the stores.

-Plus it’s healthy??  {seriously, don’t slap me!}-

Win-Win!

So I am basically a Coconut Oil convert.

Using it for deodorant? That might take a little more convincing.

Instructions

  1. In a large (microwavable) measuring cup or bowl combine the coconut oil and chocolate chips.
  2. Microwave in intervals of 30 seconds at 50% power, stirring in between until smooth. Took me 3 intervals to reach the perfect consistency.
  3. Drizzle over ice cream and let sit for 30-45 seconds to harden.
  4. Store in an air tight container at ROOM TEMPERATURE. (The Magic Shell may harden slightly, but just microwave for a few seconds till it is liquid again.)

    What how crazy

  3. Oh, yum! I never knew it was that easy to make. I’ve been eyeing the coconut oil at the store, but just have not been able to justify the purchase, yet. Now I have a good excuse with some birthdays coming up! Thanks!

  4. This is wonderful, all of our dairy queens are going out of business around here and this is an exact match for their chocolate yeah! I am so happy I found this recipe here and it could not possibly get easier. Thanks so much!!!!!!!!!

  5. It’s a nice website and very giving knowledge.

  6. Can you do this without a microwave? Like on a stovetop? I don’t have a microwave, but I’d love to make this!

    • Hi Daisy, yes of course! :) just place the chocolate and coconut oil in a glass or metal bowl (one that can fit inside of a small pot without touching the bottom). Add about an inch of water to that small pot and bring to a boil. Place the bowl on top of the pot (creating a gentle and indirect heat, known as a “double boiler”) and stir until the chocolate is smooth. Should work like a charm! :)

  7. Rochelle says:

In what section of the store do I find coconut oil? Thanks, Rochelle

    • Hi Rochelle! You would probably find it next to the natural foods section, or you could always ask an employee of the store for help. :) You’ll love it, so much better for you than regular oil!

Hi.. I am super excited on seeing the molten lava cake recipe.. I want to make the magic shell too.. but being from the middle east, the coconut oil we get here is liquid at room temperature unlike the oil in your photos. Is there any other substitute? Thank you
